At PhysioQinetics, we work very closely with our director physician and cardiologist Dr Joshua Chai to provide cardiac rehabilitation to patients with heart disease.
One of the common questions we get asked a lot is - "Is my muscle ache related to my cholesterol (Statin) treatment?".
In the age of Internet with widespread misinformation on the social media, it is increasingly important to be critical of what we read and seek more authoritative source of information to combat and dispel misinformation. Dr Chai is a consultant cardiologist and a widely-published award-winning cardiovascular scientist who specialises in coronary artery disease and applies state-of-the-art imaging techniques to interrogate cholesterol deposits (atherosclerotic plaques) that are the precursor to heart attack and stroke.
Dr Chai has written a 3-part series discussing Statins and Cardiovascular Risk.
In Part 1 of the blog series, we will explore the fallacy of some alleged claims against statins, a brief overview of the vast amount of data available to guide informed decisions on statin therapy, as well as some latest research on how statin stacked up against other traditional (or no!) therapy in China.
In Part 2 of the blog series, we will also look at how "statins causing muscle ache" was elegantly debunked.
In the final Part 3 of the blog series, we will look at the paradigm shift from vulnerable plaques to vulnerable patients and the concept of cardiovascular risk. We will discuss how to practice individualised precision medicine and how to tailor our lipid treatment strategy using a reinforced arsenal of new anti-lipid drugs in 21st century.
